“How do I stop losing muscle while losing weight?”

This is something we hear a lot — especially from people who are actively trying to lose body fat.

Losing weight doesn’t always mean losing only fat. Lean muscle can be lost too, particularly when calorie intake is low and you’re not getting enough protein or resistance training.

So what can you do to give your body the best chance of holding onto muscle? :backhand_index_pointing_down:

:cut_of_meat: Prioritise protein — Make protein a regular part of your meals.

:person_lifting_weights: Strength train — Give your muscles a reason to stay strong.

:person_walking: Stay active — Walking and general movement still matter.

 Recover properly — Sleep and recovery are an important part of maintaining performance.

:chart_decreasing: Avoid unnecessarily aggressive weight loss — Faster isn’t always better.

:backhand_index_pointing_down: Let’s discuss

What has worked for you when trying to lose fat without losing muscle?

And if you’re struggling with this right now, what’s the biggest challenge — nutrition, training, recovery or something else?

What matters more for health: being lean or being metabolically healthy?

Metabolic health matters more. While maintaining a healthy body composition is beneficial, someone can be lean yet have insulin resistance, high blood pressure, or abnormal cholesterol (“TOFI” – thin outside, fat inside). Conversely, some people carrying extra weight may have better metabolic markers. The goal isn’t simply to be lighter—it’s to improve metabolic health through good nutrition, regular exercise, quality sleep, stress management, and, where appropriate, medical treatment.
